CONSERVATION COMMUNITY GARDENS

The small rural schools of indigenous Costa Rica are the heart of the pueblo. We partner with Ngabe Territory Schools to plant conservation gardens for the benefit of birds and community.

We began implementing our vision for conservation-community gardens at Indigenous Territory schools in the pueblo at Escuela Vista Del Mar. The school is right next door to Sparkroot Wild, where we share a trellis along which we planted passionfruit vines. We share the fruit, while birds and bees enjoy the flowers!

Our goal is to plant ‘beneficial-to-birds’ gardens and orchards at all fourteen Territory schools, including native trees, banana, plantain, citrus, guava and almond (purchased from an indigenous-operated native fruit tree nursery, currently in development).

Our overarching mission is in full fruition in this initiative while benefitting birds by increasing habitat and food stores, serving communities through conservation, empowering indigenous entrepreneurs, protecting pollinators and, of course, creating smiles on the faces of the children, who will be able to enjoy fresh fruits and frescos with their school lunches!

Paired with a beautiful mural - including culturally significant birds of the Ngabe culture - and endemic or threatened birds of Costa Rica, the school gardens and murals will be visible along a series of guided avitourism horse trails, where local households can provide artisan handcrafts and hospitality to respectful birdwatchers in search of that secretive life-lister and a rare cultural experience. This will provide a boost to the local subsistence economy in a remote area with low employment opportunity, a place still rich with a diversity of life, abundance and story.

To make this vision a sustainable reality, we need your help. Participate in the making of a kinder, healthier and abundant world now. Thank you for your support!
